the very 1st "console" i owned was a nintendo handheld so i've always been a fan of mobile gaming. i personally think steam deck and switch in handheld mode are an awkward size. they seem more intended for on-the-couch than on-the-go. i was playing golden sun on my phone and didn't like how distorted the graphics appeared on a larger screen. i was also curious about all these retro 3rd party handhelds being released, and after some research i found one i liked with a screen size closest to the original gba.
i am so impressed with this device. excepting the fact you can't trade pokemon without tranferring saves to a PC, this device feels like it came out of my childhood imagination. reviews say it can run some but not all ps2 and gamecube games, but that just seems like setting myself up for disappointment. it runs ps1 and n64 roms just fine although the device gets a little warm during extended play. i wouldn't play n64 or ps1 games for the first time on a screen this small (it's great for revisiting titles you're familar with) so luckily there is a microhdmi port and adapters are cheap.
i originally bought the translucent green model, which looks excellent, but there was a dead pixel. after i returned it, i decided to pay an extra $50 for the metal edition (the plastic one was extremely lightweight). the *heft* feels pretty great on the metal edition.
